I do not normally talk about it amongst my friends or colleagues but I felt that it was important to share my own experience with all of you.  Perhaps it is the fact that you do not know me personally…..Or perhaps putting it in writing makes it easier for me to express myself, rather than talking to someone face to face.  You see, I am a grave disease patient since 2002.  Being ignorance of the disease, I did not realize that I had a very serious thyroid problem.  I had all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, that is, insomnia, heat intolerance, weight loss despite increased appetite, palpitations (rapid heart beat), hand tremors, heavy sweating, light menstrual flow, high metabolism rate, anxious, restless, irritating, hair loss and worst of all bulging eyes.

Grave disease is an autoimmune disease characterized by a metabolic imbalance resulting from over production of thyroid hormone known as hyperthyroidism.   The body produces antibodies against itself that attack the thyroid gland.  In addition, the eyes of people with grave disease may appear enlarged because their eye lids are retracted and their eyes bulge out from the eye sockets.

 Friends and family members who seen me every day did not see the difference in my eyes.  I was travelling outstation and my colleague who had not seen me for months alerted me that I might be having thyroid problem when he see my slight bulging eyes.

Back from travelling I went to a private clinic and have my blood tested.  The blood test result was devastating; FT4: 56 pmol/L (Normal: 9-25), TSH: <0.10 mIU/L (Normal: 0.4-4.7) and FT3: 31.8 pmol/L (Normal: 3.6-6.5).  The doctor immediately prescribed me with Propranolol to treat my rapid heart beat that is above 100 pulse per minute and Carbimazole to control the production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.

After 4 months on medication, I went for another blood test; FT3 and FT4 level were normalized but TSH was still abnormal.  I continued the medication for another 2 months without going for any further blood test.  It was then in October 2002 that my friend introduced me to Homeopathy treatment.

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine which states that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.  Homeopathic remedies are mostly derived from natural substances that come from plants, minerals or animals.  Believing that natural substances were better than the conventional medicines that might cause side effects, it is the reason that I had decided to revert to Homeopathy.

After a year on Homeopathy my condition did not improve; my bulging eyes became more prominent and blood test result is more devastating; FT4: 72.2 pmol/L, TSH: <0.01 mIU/L and FT3: >30 pmol/L.  Then I met a doctor at a fellowship gathering, she told me that I am risking my life for not taking the conventional medicine and advised me to see her at the public hospital as soon as possible.  It was weeks after that I made the appointment to see her and since then I have been taking Carbimazole.  Until today I am still on the medication; my protruding eyes have improved and FT3 and FT4 are in the normal range.

Besides the medication, I am also taking supplements to help maintain my body health.  The supplements that I am taking are multivitamins, calcium carbonate to prevent bone loss and glucosamine for maintenance of healthy joint.

Jenga is a game which every family should have. It’s so easy to play and there is no limit to the number of players. Both children and adult can play because the rules are pretty simple. All you need to do is stack the blocks into a tower without letting it fall. The taller the tower is, the harder it is to prevent it from falling because you need to take some blocks from the bottom of the tower to make it taller! The loser is the one who topples the tower.

I like that the blocks are well constructed and durable. The canister was great for storing the blocks so that nothing gets strewn all over. Besides that, the handy canister also makes the game easy to carry around. Jenga is great as a family game for those rainy days where kids have to stay indoor. When children have started their pre school, most parents would start planning what school to send for their next level of education; whether the boy school, girl school or co-educational school. For those parents who can afford, they would probably choose the best private in town and for the others, public school nearest to home is the best choice.

There are pros and cons for both single sex and co-educational schools. In boys school, with no girls to impress, the boys are more at ease to take up any feminine subjects like language, art, drama or music but will also get into a lot more fights than those in co-educational school. Likewise in girls school, girls can be more competitive and taking up boys’ sports without worrying to be called tom boys. Single sex school has indirectly encouraged the children to just be themselves and allowing them to develop their own unique characters without worrying about what the other gender might think about him or her.

I have nephews and nieces studying in single sex school and coeducational school. Comparing the two different schools, girls in the co-education tend to be more studious and score better academically whereas the boys are more lagging in their study. The good point for children from co-educational school is that they are better prepared for the outside world as they would gain the interactive and social skills with the opposite gender as they grow. To conclude, parents should not only base their decision on what school to send, they should also consider the reputation of the school and the quality of the education provided.

Burns are hard to avoid, they can happen any time at home and are disastrous when small children are involved. The burns could be caused by kitchen fire, hot liquid or heated pot or pan. I for one had often accidentally touched the heated pot when in a hurry of cooking oats for my breakfast before rushing for work. • You’ll Need: Scotch-Blue™ Painter’s Tape, roller, roller tray, paint, paint brushes, tape measure, bubble or laser level, putty knife or 5-in-1 tool.
• Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Planning
Measure the walls so you can plan your pattern and colors. You may want to make a drawing to scale. Shapes (e.g., triangles, rectangles) can completely cover the wall, overlap, or be freestanding.

2. Choose the paint colors
Selecting contrasting colors will result in a bold look. Using three or four colors from the same family in a monochromatic color scheme can soften a dramatic pattern.

3. Prep & Mask
Make sure the wall is clean and dry.
Mask painted trim and woodwork using ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape.
If your ceiling is smooth, mask it to prevent paint splashes. Do not mask textured ceilings.

4. Paint
Using the base color, paint the entire wall.
Let dry for at least 24 hours.

5. Stencil
Using a bubble level and a long straight edge, lightly pencil your pattern, like big blocks, stripes on personalize with your initials, on the wall.

6. Tape
Using ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape for Delicate Surfaces, tape around all of the shapes that you’re painting with your first color.
Press down the edges of the tape with a putty knife or 5-in-1 tool.
Note: If the wall you’re painting is not a smooth surface, be sure to seal the inside edge of the tape with the paint color you used to paint the wall. This helps ensure the sharpest paint lines.

7. Paint
Paint inside the tape with your first color. Let dry for at least 24 hours. Remove the tape and then mask the next shape you are going to paint.
Continue the process, painting from lighter to darker colors until all the walls are complete.

Spending quality time together has always been a priority to our family and we try to go for outings as often as possible. However, when outdoor activities are not possible, my kids are always on the lookout for fun ways to spend time together. One of our favourite indoor activity is playing the popular card game called UNO.

UNO can be played with 2 people at a minimum and 10 people maximum. It can be played individually or by teams also. The rules of the game are simple enough for younger kids to play while the game itself is exciting enough for adults to join in the fun. Since I felt that my 10 year old son’s English needed to be improved and because he loves reading adventure books, I decided to buy him some titles which I had read when I was his age. I bought a book by Enid Blyton entitled The Secret Seven. He finished the book within 3 days and is already asking for the rest of the books in the series. For those who have never read The Secret Seven before, I’m sharing my review here.

The Secret Seven is the installment before the Secret Seven’s adventure takes place. The Secret Seven is a secret society headed by, Peter. The book tackles on the mystery which is happening within their society from missing animals and people to robberies. They accomplish their mystery solving by shadowing, interviewing and by doing detective work. In this book people will get to know the members of the Secret Seven and what roles in the society they play as well as how they solve mysteries they come upon.

If you’re trying to encourage reading, The Secret Seven is an ideal book to start any tween with. The story is not too long and the English is well written, easy to understand but yet at times, one can also discover and learn new words.  This book of adventure and mystery will  make the reading experience fun, enjoyable and you’ll look forward to reading the other titles in the series too.
